Night for a walk..

Has it been unbelievable weather this week or what? Caught these ladies out for an early evening walk around the green....long shadows tells me it was probably after seven o'clock...  enjoy your weekend everyone, no-matter where your location...

Goin' green...

I am used to looking out the front window of my store and seeing all kinds of vehicles. Cars, trucks, motorcycles, bicycles, scooters,  dump trucks, tractors.....what am I forgetting? And of these vehicles, I see some pretty impressive vehicles. Brand new cars. Very old cars. Junks. Restored beauties. Race cars. Super-expensive cars. And not so expensive cars. Today, I saw a mode of transportation I haven't seen come rolling up and park in the blue space and the driver embarked and went to the pharmacy.

I grabbed my camera as there was no one in the store and I grabbed the following picture. How cool!

Dual arm rests. Carry basket for the mail and a quart of milk (or maybe a bottle of vino?). Headrest. Chrome wheels. Head light, signal flashers and dual racing mirrors. How cool!

And who do you suppose was the driver? None other than Sharon's own, the Honorable James L. Buckley.

As a rider of a scooter for many years now, and really enjoying saving gas, I commend Jim for his using this little scoot for getting around town. Like my scooter, not much fun in January, but right now.....very cool!

Buried history.....

On the corner of Hilltop and North Main, on the southeast corner, is a lovely home hidden behind a hedge of evergreens. They haven't always been there. In my childhood this was The Noyes house. I honestly don't know the name of the folks who reside there now, but I do know they are a nice couple, I just have never really been introduced. I guess I need to step-up and introduce myself.

The point of my blog today. Look dead center in the grass, between the sidewalk and the road. See the cream-colored object? It is a buried stone, from a set of steps I would imagine. This stone probably goes back to the time the house was built, wouldn't you think? Seems a shame that it and perhaps others are buried under years of road dirt and grass.

My thought or question. Shouldn't/ couldn't it be uncovered if it is indeed part of a set of steps? If it were to be a safety question, couldn't it be perhaps raised and made safe? Or possible removal and placed where it could be part of the towns history to be seen? Liz...are you there? Do you have an opinion? Or The Historic District....anyone got an opinion?

I won't go as far to say I wish there were no evergreen hedge there, that is was all open and we all could see the front of this lovely home and the steps. But, I totally respect the owners rights, and am sure they appreciate the "buffer" that the hedge provides, both from car lights, noise and for privacy.

Just me thinking. I also wonder if anyone has ever approached them with these or similar thoughts? Hmmmmm.

Time for a "brush-back", and I'm not talking pitches....

On a stroll around historic Sharon Green this past Sunday evening, I came upon about a one hundred foot stretch of sidewalk that is, well, being encroached upon. From Jenny Hansell's house to the old Noyes house, on the corner of Hilltop and Main, the sidewalk is, well, growing in. It is single-file wide, so two people can't pass without one going on the grass. Okay in the summer, but what to do in the winter? And how is the John Deere to make it through there this winter? Perhaps some good group of volunteers could bring shears and loppers and do some cutting back? Or perhaps one of the local professional organizations could be hired to "push it back?" Or maybe Scott Garay could give it a haircut with his equipment? Just wondering, before someone steps off the edge, twists their ankle and the Town of Sharon gets an insurance claim it could maybe have prevented?

What.......a........day!

Back when the radio station in Sharon was owned by Warren Gregory, they had a weatherman on their "staff" who used to every time there was a nice day, he'd say it was a "top ten" day of the year. I remember some years we had 40 or more top ten days!

With all that said, personally, I thought that today was a top 10 day, maybe even top five! From sunrise to sunset, it was just so special. Just after dinner hour (not ours, most peoples!) we took a nice walk around the green in Sharon. I saw a number of interesting things, so watch in the coming days for some perhaps familiar shots and perhaps some commentary which might push a button or two, to perhaps inspire some time and effort to help keep our town's history alive.

Tonight's photo: what a shame....empty benches.

Agriturismo in Pine Plains

Clare and I ventured out-of-county, out-of-state tonight for a meal-out to sort-of end the summer for Clare, who's back teaching in school Monday morning. I had heard about this place so we thought we'd give it a try.

Located on Church Street (the main drag) in Pine Plains, New York, just west of the center of town (sixteen miles from Sharon), we were greeted by a friendly gent who said if we would eat outside, we could be seated. Inside, there is a wait. (It was Saturday evening) Starving, we said we'll gladly sit outside. Nice linen tablecloths and napkins, and nice silverware. (we've been to a few "nice" places lately that had junk for silverware.) Sticker shock hit me with the wine list. (I know what a bottle costs) The meal prices were all above $20.00. With that said, I had broiled scallops that were delicious! Served along with nice potatoes and some nice small, sweet steamed squash, it was very nice. Clare had a nice meal as well, but I must admit, I did think their prices were high for the quantity. Quality was very good however.

If money is of no matter to you, I would recommend it immensely.  Very good food. A lady who I presume is the owner paid attention to us, and was very hospitable.  I have a limit on what I can afford for a meal. Tonight, we went over it. We will not frequent here often because of that.

Sabbatical's Over (I hope!)

Truth be told.... I have had a lot of fun during this past month without worrying about having a camera in my hand every day to gather a pic or story for my blog. It's been nice.

With that said, tonight Clare, Cat and I headed south to Kent, to the annual Fireman's Carnival. I had my annual pulled-pork sandwich, and Clare had her annual roast beef. Very pleasing! We played Bingo, and Cat won the biggest prize while we were there! Then we hit up the cake booth, and Cat won a plate of cupcakes and I won a great blueberry cake. Delicious! We're home now, having tea, and enjoying the cake.

That was all fun, but the other entertaining thing tonight was being a spectator of the 12th Annual Frog-Jumping Contest, also held there while we were there.

Great time! Those buggers can jump too! If you haven't ever gone to one, and you're given the chance...GO!

Sharon-ite Dylan Roberts was a big supplier of some mighty big croakers. Look at the size of this little monster!!
